A good night's sleep is the key to waking up energized and alert, but if you get quality sleep, will you also wake up with more beautiful skin? There are many benefits that come from getting enough zzz's, and it turns out, there’s a reason some call it beauty sleep. As we sleep at night it gives the skin an opportunity to recover from the wear and tear it experiences during the day.

Here is what you should know about getting a good night's sleep:

1

Unplug and Unwind

You probably already know that blue light can ruin your sleep. We're here to tell you that it’s true. A study shows that even low levels of blue light can prevent melatonin from doing its job, which is to help you sleep. The best thing you can do for your self-care bedtime routine is to keep electronic devices like TVs, laptops, and cellphones out of your sleep space. You can even take this tip a step further by going device-free earlier in the evening to give your brain the chance to wind down from work, social media, and texts. Blue light-blocking glasses are also a good option to try if you enjoy winding down to Netflix.

You can also practice putting your devices into Night Mode in the evening and putting it on Airplane mode before bed. If you want to take it a step further you can also unplug your WiFi router before going to bed to save yourself from scrolling on social media platforms.

2

Prepare for Tomorrow

Prepare yourself for the next day by setting goals and intentions before bed. That can mean jotting down a “To Do” list to help prevent feeling overwhelmed the following morning, or tidying up your space to feel relaxed and peaceful when you wake up.

3

Nourish Your Mind

Reading a relaxing book before bed is a wonderful way to disconnect from the day and prepare yourself for sleep. Consider choosing a book that doesn’t involve a lot of effort or thought, or go for something positive and inspiring to read and set your mind for positivity. Reading is an effective way to distract from your urge to pick up those electronic devices and away from social media.

Bye Bye Make Up

After a long day of work and school, wouldn't you love to crawl into bed? But wait—don’t sleep with your makeup on! Not only will it clog your pores, but also cause itchy pimples. So be sure to take these steps before you get under the covers:

  • Use a makeup remover
No matter how effective a facial cleanser may be, using a makeup remover before washing your face is a big help since it’s like a magnet in removing the dirt and oil of the makeup you wore all day. One type of this is micellar water, which was proven effective by dermatologists and beauty bloggers.
  • Cleanse and Use Toner
Commuting sucks and your skin knows it. All the dust, polluted smoke from vehicles, and other kinds of dirt are being absorbed by your skin. That’s why you really need to cleanse and tone your skin at night before applying any other skincare products again.
  • Apply your night cream and serum
Many women are confused as to which should be applied first, always remember that your serum should go on first since it is lighter than your moisturizer. Serums are thin, so they penetrate deep into your skin and absorb almost immediately. They are best for addressing acne and other blemishes. If you don’t already have a serum, try using Vitamin C, one that will clear up dark spots and other blemishes on your face. After the serum has been absorbed, use a moisturizer to hydrate your skin from water loss.
  • Have extra time to spare?
Wear a sheet mask or sleeping mask while listening to your favorite playlist. They have concentrated ingredients that can refine pores and enhance skin's collagen production.

And for those of you who are still worried about the state of your skin, a facial jade roller can help smooth out your face and improve its blood circulation. So after hydrating your skin in the way described above, set to work rolling around your face in gentle motions starting at the neck, then moving up to the cheeks, forehead, and corners of the eyes

There are many ways to take care of your skin. Good sleep and night routines are just a few suggestions, but keep in mind that you have unique skin with unique needs. Using these products may produce varied results, and it may not work for your skin.

So, you can do this! Keep exploring to learn more about your skin's needs. Once you have a working regimen that suits you, stick with it and you'll definitely love the results.
